Simpsonville Council to Weigh Ban on License Plate Reader Cameras

SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. — Simpsonville could become the latest Upstate community to turn off automatic license plate reader cameras, with City Council set to take up a proposed ban on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Ordinance O-2026-14, sponsored by Councilmember Sherry Roche, would bar the camera technology anywhere inside city limits and wind down the city’s existing reader contracts as their terms allow. The proposal is on the agenda for a Committee of the Whole session that starts at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, following a brief special called meeting at 5:45 p.m.

Residents who want to address council must sign up at least 10 minutes before the meeting begins, and each speaker gets three minutes.

The plate readers, sold by companies such as Flock Safety, have drawn pushback across the region. Oconee County Council voted in September to ban the cameras countywide, the first county in South Carolina to do so, and Asheville ended its Flock contract in August. Supporters in law enforcement, including Pickens County Sheriff Tommy Blankenship, have argued the cameras help find missing children and stolen cars while backing clear limits on their use.

The council’s next regular business meeting is set for Nov. 10.
