GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Foundry at Judson Mill, one of the larger music rooms in Greenville, is getting new owners, and they plan to spend about $150,000 fixing it up.
Wes Gilliam, a co-owner of the Radio Room, is buying the venue with John Peters of MassConcerts, an independent promoter. The pair take over the lease in January. Gilliam said the money will go to a new public address system, new decor and a reworked bar, and earlier plans also call for a bigger stage, better lighting and more dressing rooms for artists.
Gilliam said he has booked shows at The Foundry before and found it poorly suited to bills with four or five bands, citing a dated sound system, a single green room and too little storage for gear.
The Foundry sells about 1,150 tickets, compared with roughly 500 at the Radio Room, so Gilliam said shows that sell out fast at the smaller club could move to the bigger room. Past headliners at the mill include Marcus King and Mt. Joy.
The venue will stay open during the work. Wednesday and Saturday line dancing could be paused for a week or two, Gilliam said, and current staff are expected to stay on.
