GREENVILLE, S.C. — Six years after Sgt. Conley Jumper died in the line of duty on Interstate 85, his daughter carries his badge on her own Greenville County patrol shifts, often in parts of the county he covered.
Jumper, who spent 28 years with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, died Oct. 20, 2020, after a driver broke away from deputies during a traffic stop near White Horse Road and sped into traffic, striking a tractor-trailer and pinning the sergeant between the vehicles. He was posthumously promoted from master deputy to sergeant.
Back then, Cat Jumper was studying at Wofford College on a pre-law track and expected to become a lawyer. She has said the support the sheriff’s office gave her family in the months after his death, along with letters from residents her father had helped, steered her toward police work instead.
Her first law enforcement job was with the State Law Enforcement Division in Greenwood, and she made the move to her father’s old agency in 2025. Residents who knew her father now recognize the name on her uniform.
The county also put the sergeant’s name on a school security center in Taylors a year ago.
