GREENVILLE, S.C. — Two Greenville gatherings this week give families a chance to mark Día de los Muertos, the Mexican tradition of remembering loved ones that usually falls on Nov. 1 and 2.
First up is the Greenville Humane Society, which opens its campus at 305 Airport Rd on Tuesday, Oct. 27, for a celebration focused on pets that have died. Guests are invited to bring a favorite photo of an animal companion for a shared altar, and the shelter plans activities for children, displays explaining the holiday, snacks and entertainment.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, the youth nonprofit Mosaic Educational and Arts hosts a free celebration starting at 5:30 PM at 7 Shannon Drive. Young dancers will perform folkloric routines, and visitors may add a keepsake to a community ofrenda or bring a dish to share.
Ofrendas are home altars dressed with photographs, candles, favorite foods and orange marigolds, which families believe help guide the spirits of the departed back for a visit.
Both events are open to everyone, including families simply curious about the holiday.
