SCDOT to Close East Butler Road Bridge Over I-385 June 15 Through August for Rehab

If you cross East Butler Road over I-385 on your commute, mark June 15 on your calendar — SCDOT is closing the bridge for nearly two months of rehab work.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced the East Butler Road bridge over I-385 in Greenville County will close starting Monday, June 15 for deck resurfacing. Reopening is expected by August 6, weather permitting.

What drivers need to know

  • Closure starts: Monday, June 15
  • Expected reopening: Thursday, August 6
  • Reason: Bridge deck resurfacing
  • I-385 below: Remains open; expect intermittent overnight lane shifts

Detour options

SCDOT has not published a single signed detour route, but drivers between Mauldin and Simpsonville should plan for one of these alternatives:

  • North-side detour: Brockman-McClimon Road to Cely Road
  • South-side detour: Old Stage Road or Bridges Road, depending on origin
  • Through-traffic: Use I-385 exits at Woodruff Road (Exit 35) or Fairview Road (Exit 27)

Why this matters for Greenville

East Butler Road is a primary east-west connector between the Mauldin and Five Forks/Simpsonville commercial corridors. Average daily traffic on the bridge exceeds 12,000 vehicles. Local businesses along East Butler near the I-385 interchange should expect reduced drive-by traffic during the eight-week closure.

School and emergency-services notes

The closure overlaps the start of Greenville County Schools’ fall semester (target start: August 11), so the timeline includes a slim buffer for SCDOT to wrap on schedule before school traffic resumes. Greenville County EMS and fire dispatchers have been notified of the closure to adjust response routing.

Real-time traffic conditions and SCDOT lane closures are available at scdot.org/travel and via the 511SC mobile app.
