Greenville, South Carolina – Multiple vehicle crashes caused lane closures and injuries in the region this week, prompting significant traffic disruptions for local drivers. The Greenville Police Department reported that two separate incidents took place, impacting both I-385 and I-85 highways within days of each other.
The first incident occurred on Wednesday around 5 p.m. on I-385 near exit 37 to Roper Mountain Road. This crash involved a two-vehicle collision, one of which overturned. Fortunately, only one person sustained minor injuries and was immediately transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. All lanes on I-385 were eventually reopened to traffic by 5:55 p.m., allowing the flow of vehicles to return to normal.
Just a day earlier, on Tuesday around 3 p.m., another crash took place on I-85 South at exit 46 (Mauldin Road). This incident involved two semi-trucks and caused a significant diesel fuel spill on the highway. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene, and while two lanes were closed to ensure safety and facilitate cleanup efforts, all lanes reopened by 6:30 p.m. Drivers were warned to expect considerable delays on I-85 and were advised to consider alternate routes during the incident.
In a more tragic event, a fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, May 14, on the 1700 block of SW Greenville Boulevard shortly before 7 p.m. Witnesses reported that a white Dodge Charger was speeding and utilizing the center turn lane as a travel lane. The Charger subsequently merged into traffic and collided with a Nissan that was exiting the Family Dollar parking lot. The driver of the Nissan, identified as 24-year-old Jalen Wright of Greenville, tragically died on the scene. Additionally, three other individuals involved in the collision suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to ECU Health for medical attention. This incident is currently under investigation.
Earlier on Sunday morning, a separate incident involved an 18-year-old from Dayton who was injured in a crash that originated from a stolen vehicle. The vehicle theft was reported shortly after 3:45 a.m., leading police to locate the stolen vehicle near North Broadway Street. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver fled, resulting in a short pursuit. The chase came to a halt when the suspect crashed into a traffic circle and a building on South Broadway Street. The driver was apprehended at the scene and taken to Miami Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Consequently, the individual now faces multiple felony charges related to this incident.
This week’s series of collisions highlights the ongoing issue of traffic safety in Greenville and surrounding areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise motorists to remain vigilant while driving. It is essential for all drivers to adhere to traffic laws and regulations to help ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
